Working as an art director, I’ve traveled to many tropical locations. Always drawn to lush gardens, I never tire of the beauty of a gorgeous bloom. Hiking near Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica, I came upon a spectacular pink bloom in the middle of the rain forest. It stood out like a rare gem against a dark leafy backdrop. Mesmerized, I stopped to take in the full beauty of the flower. Later, my research revealed that it was a torch ginger. This torch ginger had some sort of strange hold over me. I could not stop thinking about it. I drew it, painted it and studied it. Then I drew it and painted it again. I was compelled to capture this particular bloom — like an exotic sculpture existing for only a brief time — in its natural surroundings. 

Now I search for these living treasures everywhere I go, and seek to re-create each one in its unique environment. Living in Florida, I often find inspiration right out the back door — even in the middle of winter. Imagine my gratitude! The world is my garden.

Natural beauty is truly a blessing to the soul. Painting these ephemeral beauties makes me happy. The only greater satisfaction is seeing my artwork bring joy to someone else. Be intentional each day, about putting beauty in your path — and the path of someone else— and that will make two hearts happier.
